A Race for Rats in The Winter of Our Discontent Essay -- Winter of Our

A Race for Rats in The Winter of Our Discontent  A few sprinters look just to the end goal, deciding to disregard what they step on or who they go en route. In The Winter of Our Discontent, Steinbeck depicts the unfolding of an egotistical American culture concerned exclusively with winning individual races. Set in a little New England town during the mid sixties, the story centers around the life of Ethan Allen Hawley, a canny man with esteemed family ancestry who is utilized as a merchant to the consternation of individuals from his family and the network. Toward the start of the novel, Ethan had not yet embraced the new religion of America, to care for number one (26,291) so as to pick up cash and social standing. Be that as it may, as the story comes to pass, Ethan, as different characters, decides to capitulate to enticement and to place himself above others as all expenses, as if concentrating on a gleaming red, white and blue completion. Ethan’s ruin speaks to America’s loss of family, social, and virtues as in dividual achievement turns into extremely significant. The Hawleys’ clashes exemplify the separating of the American family as egotistical wants separation every part from the nuclear family. Ethan and his better half, Mary, seek after various objectives throughout everyday life and need correspondence. Dissimilar to Ethan, Mary longed for good fortune†¦ (46). Embarrassed about her husband’s work, she tells Ethan A fantastic noble men without cash is a bum (43) in one of only a handful hardly any contentions the couple have. Frequently, Ethan and Mary maintain a strategic distance from encounter by acting senseless on the grounds that they acknowledge the partition in their marriage. Ethan concedes, such a significant number of things I don’t think about my Mary, and among them, the amount she thinks about me. (56) Because they’d rather pursue their own objectives as opposed to compromising, ... ...eal to ransack a bank where his companion, Morph is utilized (284). His ravenousness moves him to plot a few lucrative plans, relentless until he has all that could possibly be needed cash, and his desire pushes him to Margie’s house one night (341). Ethan becomes had (99) with the new estimations of American and drops his ethics on the sideline. After his ownership, Ethan submits egotistical act after narrow minded act until the end of the novel when he decides not to murder himself so as to spare his girl (358). Ethan knows he’s been running in a rat’s race. America’s new fixation on dealing with number one at any cost forfeits family, social and virtues that are invaluable. Childishness makes for a forlorn America in which every individual is so blinded by his own objectives that he can't turn out to be near any other individual. The individuals who decide not to run that race win their spirits.

Essay on Crime

Essay on Crime Inchoate Crimes Inchoate crime is legally defined by the law as a preparedness of an individual to be involved in a crime. Inchoate crimes are sometimes referred to as incomplete crimes since the people intending to commit the crime is stopped by the law from committing the offence before he/she commits the perceived crime. Most of the times inchoate crime often criminals attempt to engage in criminal activity. The laws of several countries describe inchoate crimes as illegally deemed conducts that do not involve an action of an actual harm given that the law serves an obligation of trying to prevent the damage from occurring (Ashworths et al., 454). It is important to note that inchoate crimes involve both direct and indirect actions of crime participation. Inchoate crimes are classified into three parts which include; solicitation, conspiracy and attempt to commit a crime (Utset, 52). Types Of Inchoate Crimes Try To Commit A Crime; An attempt to commit a crime is defined as an inchoate crime since the individuals trying to commit a crime are more often trying to engage themselves in criminal activity to no avail of fulfilling their intended actions. Some examples of attempted crime involve threats and blackmail. Try to get to committing crimes are often precipitated by challenges that individuals go through. Conspiracy is a type of an inchoate crime whereby people come into an agreement with another party in the verge of committing a crime. Conspiracy to commit a crime is an indirect involvement in a criminal activity and therefore referred to as inchoate crime. Persons found guilty to involve in the conspiracy to perform an illegal activity are liable to the wrath of the laws despite the fact that they were not participating in the crime itself. Solicitation, on the other hand, is an inchoate crime whereby a person who intends to commit a crime does not personally engage in a crime but asks another person to commit the offense on their behalf. According to the international standards of legal justice, the person involved in a solicit crime should be charged with a criminal offense even if they do not commit the crime (Van et al., 71). A good example of a solicitation crime is that of murder where an individual pays someone or a group to kill. Defenses That Show That an Actor Did Not Have The Mental Ability To Form The Necessary Intent To Commit A Crime Sometimes individuals may be forced to commit a crime beyond their expectations. Some of the reasons that people often give a defense to committing a crime without their intent include; self-defence, threat, and blackmail or drug influence. People may defend themselves to have committed a crime due to the threat that they receive from perpetrators. For instance, an individual whose loved one has been kidnapped may be involved in a conspiracy crime of failing to report such a case to the police due to threat and blackmail information they received from the criminal. Such individuals due to fear are forced to give into the demands of the major crimes for the sake of their loved one safety. In other instances, people may be involved in non-intended criminal activity when trying to defend themselves from something they perceive to be harmful to their well being. For example, a rape victim who frees his/herself from the perpetrators by use of force and pain infliction to the perpetrator i s considered to have acted in self-defense. However, not all cases of defenses are accepted by the law to be the cause of mental ability to perform an intent crime. For instance; Constitutional requirements do not accept influence of alcohol as a defence to an individual involvelvement in criminal activities ( Sieber, 19). Two Elements Of A Crime The main elements of any criminal acts are illegal act/ actus reus and criminal intent/mens rea. A criminal act described as an individual action to get involved in a criminal act or unlawfully omitting a legal act. Mens Rea, on the other hand, is a criminal element which determines the cause of an individual to engage in a criminal and whether the individual had the right state of mind to justify his/her intent to commit a crime.

The state of Colorado would not be what it is today without the immense amount of history the land has encountered. One of the most interesting topics in history is baseball and Colorado has quite a history in this topic. Baseball varies from a fun outdoor activity to some and a career to others, but how did baseball become such a popular sport in Colorado? According to the article, The Secret History of Baseballs Earliest Day, written by John Thorn, baseball has been played with different variations since the 18th century in different places all over the country. Baseball has always been more of a boys game and one of the main factors that helped the sport earn its popularity was gambling. Gambling was popular in several states, including Colorado. John Thorn states, I dont think you could have had the rise of baseball without gambling (Thorn 1). This interesting fact shows that even though people took an interest in the game there were still ways of marketing the game and engaging the spectators. This was a way to keep the game intriguing and encourage more people to watch. It is important to know that baseball did not evolve primarily in Colorado but when it moved to Colorado it still went through the same evolution as it did in the beginning. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "History of Baseball in Colorado" essay for you Create order In Colorado, baseball is a very popular activity that is enjoyed by a large community, and has been since shortly after WWII, which is when it blossomed as stated by D. Rodger in the article Denver Baseball. Before Colorado established more well-known teams, businesses and social organizations would put together amateur teams and host baseball games primarily for fun and the occasional gambling, as mentioned before. In the article, Topics in History: Baseball, Leigh Jeremias supports the claim that baseball was popular well before the more popular teams were established. He mentions most of the amateur games were played at River Front Park, located in Denver, Colorado. A very important event for Colorado baseball was in when  ¦George Tebeau is said to organize the first official Colorado team, the Denvers (Jeremias 1). George Tebeau was a very important part of the success of baseball in Colorado, without him baseball would probably not be as we know it today. Not only did Tebeau organize the first minor league team, he also co-founded the American league in 1900 (Jeremias 1). With the game becoming more popular and the stands filling up the state decided to fund a better field for the team to play on. The stadium was named Bears Stadium and opened on August 14, 1948 and was able to seat 18,000 people (Rodgers 1). The Denvers were eventually replaced by the team named, The Zephyrs (as known as The Bears), which is more well-known in Colorado baseball today. The Bears was a minor league team that attracted fans from several states. The team was owned by a man named Bob Howsam and his brother Lee (Rodger, 1). Howsam is well-known for owning many popular teams and eventually left the Bears to build the Big Red Machine in Cincinnati (Rodger 1). The Bears continued to draw in fans in Denver from 1955 until 1992. Sometimes 18,000 seats were not enough and the field would still allow fans to come in after explaining the risks. This shows how incredibly well-liked baseball was and still is to this day, which can easily be established after seeing the size of Coors field. The players on the team, The Bears, are still rather famous today. D. Rodger explains, The players who wore a Denver Bears uniform before making it to the show are legion (Rodgers 1). There are several well-known baseball players that were established from such a small team and eventually made it to the major league.

The Birth, Life, And Resurrection Of Swing - 1673 Words

The Birth, Life, and Resurrection of Swing The recent increase in attention to Swing dancing has brought along a sense of nostalgia with it. This pleasant dance movement is largely fueled in part by the images of what would be today’s youth grandparents’ time, which have been passed down. The reality of Swing though was that the true Swing Era of 1935 to 1945 occurred during a time unrest, and was filled with racial tension, war, poverty, adolescent unrest, and gender discrimination. In fact, the era of Swing encompasses two of the most historical events of the century for the United States, the Great Depression from 1929-1939, and World War II from 1939-1945. While Swing music is known for having its happy up beat rhythms, and light moods, it cannot be said that the music does not encompass the heaviness of the social, political, and economic undercurrents of its time. The term â€Å"Swing† was originally coined not for the dance, but for the music. Swing music was born during the Great Depression, while many bands had been experimenting during the early Roaring Twenties it was suggested that the â€Å"†¦summer of 1929 began the journey toward the summer of 1935 and the official arrival of the Swing Era† (Hennessey, 123). While the Great Depression was a time of increased poverty and unemployment, the formation of big bands was not impacted, during this time there were many available musicians who were looking to work with new bandleaders (Barnet, 44). While bands were ableShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of Toni Morrison s Beloved 1524 Words   |  7 PagesSlave Narrative: Beloved Toni Morrison conveys her strong feelings in her novel about slavery depicting the emotional impact slavery has had on individual mainly the centered character Sethe. Muhammad Ali Cassius Clay Essay Example For Students

Muhammad Ali Cassius Clay Essay Muhammad Ali Cassius ClayI consider a hero someone that has done great things. Some of the things that I consider great are, accomplished hard goals, stood up for their own rights, done things that would be hard for me to do, and done things that are extraordinary. Muhammad Ali-Cassius Clay is someone that fills my standards of a hero. Muhammad Ali has accomplished hard goals by getting medals in the Olympics. Muhammad Ali had to stand up for his rights when he started to box. He has accomplished things in his life that would be very hard for me to accomplish. Muhammad Ali has done things that I think are very magnificent. The thing Muhammad Ali has done makes him a hero to me. At first Muhammad Ali had no intension of boxing. After his bike was stolen, in the month of October 1954, when he was twelve, his whole life destiny changed in an instant. Upon finding out that there was a police officer in the basement of a gym, Ali went down in a horrendous state of mind exclaiming a state wide bike hunt (http://www.planetpapers.com/jump.cgi?ID=182.html), and said he was going to beat up the person that sole his bike. The way his life changed was that the police officer asked him if he knew how to fight and he said no. The policeman offered Ali lessons in how to box so that he could seek on the bike thief. This was the starting point in Muhammad Alis boxing career. In the late fifties, Cassius Clay rules Golden Gloves And the AAU national champion. A quick fight at the Rome Olympics in 1960, Cassius Clay a teenager knocks beats a Polish fighter by the name of Zbigniew Pietrzykowski to a bloody pulp. Muhammad Ali took home the gold. In 1962 Muhammad Ali states that he will knock out Archie More in the forth round. His prediction came true. In 1964, Muhammad Ali became world heavy weight champing by beating Sonny Listen. Although he did not knock him out, Sonny would not enter the seventh round making Muhammad Ali world champion. After knocking out Zora Folley, he did not fight for three and a half years. During this time he was standing up for his rights during the Vietnam War. He said, I have no Quarrel with Viet Cong (www.usatoday.com). He did not want to fight because the more troops we sent in, the more we lost. His reason for mot going in was religious beliefs. Although they excused him from the war, it wasnt on very good terms. They stripped him of his world title, fined him ten thousand dollars, and sentenced him to 5 years in prison. Although he didnt fall into all that was going on around him, he stood up for his own rights. This is one of the reasons he is a hero to me. After returning to the ring in 1970, just one month after being granted a boxing license, he knocks out Jerry Quarry in the third round. Evan back in his early years young Muhammad always talked trash to his opponents. In 1971 the most anticipated fight since Louis-Shmeling 33 years earlier, Ali meets fellow Olympic champion Joe Franzier. This was called The fight of th e century. Ali losses in the fifteenth round despite all the trash talk and big talking he gave out. Then in 1974, Ali rematches Franzier and wins in the twelfth round. In the same year Ali pulls another stunner by knocking out champion George Freeman, this fight was held in Kinshasa, Zaire; this was referred to as the Rumble in the jungle. The very last fight that Ali was in was in 1981. His Career ended with a ten-round victory over Trevor Berbick. Later that year Ali began suffering symptoms of Parkinsons disease. This illness affects his movement and his speech. Ali the things that Muhammad Ali accomplished are very cool and things that would be very hard for me to undergo. Through every victory and every defeat, his motto was, Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee (Jammasterprints.com). People thought that when he was talking trash, he was building him self up or getting psyched out so that he would fight better. This was the ending of his boxing career. After his boxing car eer he began getting weaker and weaker from the illness, Parkinsons disease. In the Olympics on 1996 Ali appears to light the Olympic flame. Many people cried because of the touching moment when he got up out of his wheel chair and lit the flame. One of the people that was not feeling touches by the moment was Joe Frazier, Alis worst ring rival. He said, I wish I could have pushed Muhammad Ali into the flame (www.usatoday.com). Muhammad Ali was a great boxer who did what he told everyone he would do back when his bike was stolen. Muhammad Ali was the greatest boxer of all time. He has done a great number of things for the Islam church and helped supported organizations in his area. The illness that he got was from getting hit in the head to many times. Parkinsons disease is a horrible disease that weakens your body until you cant do anything anymore. Muhammad Ali made a great contribution to boxing by the way he danced when he fought. All the things that Muhammad Has done make him a hero to me. He stood up for his rights, did something that is cool, done extraordinary things, and did something that would be hard for me to do. Muhammad Ali-Cassius Clay is my hero because he fits my standards of a hero. .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 , .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .postImageUrl , .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 , .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:hover , .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:visited , .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:active { border:0!important; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:active , .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31 .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u23c77e247c06a50a231911cd19d5ed31:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Throughout American history, each generation has s Essay
