One of the most interesting topics in history is baseball and Colorado has quite a history in this topic. Baseball varies from a fun outdoor activity to some and a career to others, but how did baseball become such a popular sport in Colorado? According to the article, The Secret History of Baseballs Earliest Day, written by John Thorn, baseball has been played with different variations since the 18th century in different places all over the country. Baseball has always been more of a boys game and one of the main factors that helped the sport earn its popularity was gambling. Gambling was popular in several states, including Colorado. John Thorn states, I dont think you could have had the rise of baseball without gambling (Thorn 1). This interesting fact shows that even though people took an interest in the game there were still ways of marketing the game and engaging the spectators. This was a way to keep the game intriguing and encourage more people to watch. Before Colorado established more well-known teams, businesses and social organizations would put together amateur teams and host baseball games primarily for fun and the occasional gambling, as mentioned before. In the article, Topics in History: Baseball, Leigh Jeremias supports the claim that baseball was popular well before the more popular teams were established. He mentions most of the amateur games were played at River Front Park, located in Denver, Colorado. George Tebeau was a very important part of the success of baseball in Colorado, without him baseball would probably not be as we know it today. With the game becoming more popular and the stands filling up the state decided to fund a better field for the team to play on. The stadium was named Bears Stadium and opened on August 14, 1948 and was able to seat 18,000 people (Rodgers 1). The Denvers were eventually replaced by the team named, The Zephyrs (as known as The Bears), which is more well-known in Colorado baseball today. The Bears was a minor league team that attracted fans from several states. The team was owned by a man named Bob Howsam and his brother Lee (Rodger, 1). Howsam is well-known for owning many popular teams and eventually left the Bears to build the Big Red Machine in Cincinnati (Rodger 1). The Bears continued to draw in fans in Denver from 1955 until 1992. Sometimes 18,000 seats were not enough and the field would still allow fans to come in after explaining the risks. This shows how incredibly well-liked baseball was and still is to this day, which can easily be established after seeing the size of Coors field. The players on the team, The Bears, are still rather famous today. D. Rodger explains, The players who wore a Denver Bears uniform before making it to the show are legion (Rodgers 1). There are several well-known baseball players that were established from such a small team and eventually made it to the major league.
